Tell us a bit about you and what life was like before you joined Jenny Craig?

I’m a science/maths/manual arts teacher, part time BWS worker, husband, Dad of two daughters and now a granddad of a gorgeous little girl. I love to walk and go gold prospecting. I love a glass of red wine and good laugh. I’m a real home body with endless projects on the go. I have struggled with weight all most life. My weight has fluctuated up and down and during my fifties I just couldn’t bring my weight down. I have exercised almost every day of my life, yet my food habits had kept me overweight. I was feeling bad about myself and on my last family holiday to my favourite place Stradbroke Island, where I was a surf LifeSaver in my early years, I was too embarrassed to even walk on the beach because of the way I looked. I have struggled with high blood pressure for most my life and thyroid problems which have confounded my weight problems. I love going fossicking for gold – my fossicking buddy said I needed to lose weight to keep up the pace of trekking through hills and creeks with him.


Why did you decide to join Jenny Craig?

My family were concerned with how I was feeling and my continuous struggles with weight gain. While having breakfast with my family it was suggested to start Jenny Craig for 6 weeks to help kick start some weight loss. Even though I felt embarrassed but thought it was worth a try. I asked my wife Diane to support me on our Jenny Craig journey and we started together.


Can you describe your experience on the Jenny Craig program?

Michelle, our consultant at Strathpine, made me feel very at ease with her encouraging, good humoured words. She took me under her wing and each week encouraged every single gram I lost with terrific enthusiasm. Before Jenny Craig, I wouldn’t eat all day and I’d start after school and continue to bed. No matter how much I was served I still felt hungry. The big change in my life was having regular meals … as Michelle said, ‘like fueling a fire’. For the first time in my teaching career I was packed off to school with morning tea and lunch after having breakfast. After school I had snacks and then dinner and even a treat for after dinner. Yes, the weight fell off … we loved how Michelle weekly tracked my weight loss with a colourful chart. Even if l had a few hiccups Michelle would talk it through and we pushed on again. I’ve found weekly visits continue to be the most important thing in my weight loss, and now maintenance, to give me accountability. I continually have a week’s worth of Jenny Craig food in the freezer and continue to regularly have some “Jenny” days (as I call it). It takes all the worry out of portion sizing and keeps me on track.


Do you have any favourite items from the Jenny Craig menu?

I seriously love the food, especially the Cottage Pie, Chicken Satay, Fish and Chips, Lamb Moussaka, Beef Pie, Falafel Salad and Tuna Baked Potato – really love the pancakes to name a few.


Tell us more about your Jenny Craig Consultant:

Michelle is absolutely amazing and has been with me for the full journey of my weight loss. She never gave up on me and kept me on track. Even when l went backwards some weeks, she never gave up on my progress. She has a great sense of humour and shows genuine concern for me. l truly attribute my significant weight loss to her, even though she reminds me that I did the work.


How do you feel now that you’ve lost the weight?

It’s great that I can now wear clothes from any menswear shop, not just the super-size places. I don’t feel embarrassed now when I walk on the beach or go anywhere. I think it’s a great example to my students too and my work colleagues have been so encouraging. The weight loss was steady so there is no skin hanging. I have more energy and am no longer tempted with late night snacking. I continue to love my “Jenny” days and continue with regular eating patterns.


Do you have a standout moment on the Jenny Craig program you’d like to share?

It was great to buy a fancy new suit for my daughter’s wedding and everyone said I looked terrific. My funniest experience was when a colleague said to me “have you shaved off your beard?”, I have never had a beard. They knew something was different. I’m still looking for that big gold nugget but I feel that this program has really helped me to strike gold in my life.
