What to eat if you have diabetes

If you have diabetes, you might be relieved to know you don’t need special foods or to follow an obscure diet as eating well is no different than for people without diabetes.

A balanced diet is one with a variety of fresh vegetables as well as fruit, wholegrains, lean meats and alternatives, reduced fat dairy and healthy fats. It also should limit foods high in saturated fats and added sugars. Having regular meals that are spread evenly throughout the day and keeping your portions small, can also be helpful particularly if you need to lose weight.

Carbohydrate is the nutrient that has the biggest impact on your blood sugar levels so the type and amount you choose is important. Choose moderate amounts of high fibre, low glycaemic index carbohydrates such as wholegrain breads and cereals, legumes, vegetables and fruit and spread these out evenly throughout the day.

If you have diabetes and you’re looking to lose weight the great news is that the Jenny Craig Program is suitable for most people with diabetes as the menus provide regular meals that are kilojoule and portion controlled and provide a healthy balance of all of the core food groups. Weight loss is often recommended for people with diabetes as it can greatly improve blood sugar control.

If you are on insulin or other medications or are having troubles with your blood sugar levels you may need some personalised advice from your Doctor, a Diabetes Educator or Accredited Practising Dietitian.
